Subject: Quiz ...
After around 100 attempts of passing the quiz I feel like a complete idiot ...
If you really like more racers to join the competition, you should lower the barriers a bit.

If you've made 100 attempts to pass it, I believe that alone should be enough to qualify you as a racer but then again I don't run this website :)

Edit: I just registered an extra account (my apologies Bernhard, its just so I can attempt the quiz again), and saw a few questions that made me raise my eyebrows. Firstly the environment variable one is linux-specific, and as I've only ever developed on Windows I had no idea what the answer - I know I'd find it in the INSTALL file somewhere, but as its not relevant to everyone perhaps it shouldn't be included in the quiz?

There's also a tire wear question which will be misleading when the new version of TORCS is released. The question about acceleration & deceleration makes little sense to me as the power of the engine and brakes aren't specified, and that makes the answer a blind guess.

I passed the quiz on my 5th attempt. Bernhard, if you'd like to delete the "long5hot" account please go ahead :)

1: Linux specific, it is documented in the tutorial, so just a trivial lookup, maybe even google would answer it (did not try it).
2: Tire wear, will be changed then, but now it is not yet officially there. So no confusion.
3: It makes sense, because the engine and brake power usually exceeds the grip by far in the ranges where acceleration/deceleration happens.

        Ok fair enough.

I remember the quiz being a bit of an annoyance when I initially completed it, and it took longer than I expected this time too. It is fun, though I can see why people would find it frustrating if they keep getting it wrong - perhaps because it just says they've failed, no information about which questions were answered incorrectly.

Hi Fabian and welcome to the TRB.

As you wrote the 129 pages document "Optimierung und Simulation der schnellsten Runde eines Rennwagens", you are more than qualified to join us.
I will be using your work, if I intend to implement my own racing line algorithm.

Bernhard, please help Fabian to join us ;)

Welcome aboard! You've certainly joined at an interesting time, with the shift to "pro" mode along with newly-introduced tyre wear for this season.

Make sure you're working with the latest version from CVS (the r1-3-1 branch), at least until Bernhard finalizes & publishes the new release.

Also, I'm not sure of the method by which Bernhard intends to ensure the use of pro mode, but right now you can force your robots to be pro by adding the following line inside each robot driver's section in the robot XML (in the runtime drivers/robotname directory):-

      <attstr name="skill level" val="pro"/>

Here is the plan: in the past you had to set up the championship manually, if I find the time soon enough I will replace that with a generated endrace.xml which you can download directly on the event page (so no manual set up of starting list and track anymore). Maybe I will add there a "skill override" option.

The implementation should be a pretty nobrainer (just a mostly static template with a few variables hopefully), I guess locally playing through the process for testing will take most of the time.

        Kind regards
