Subject: So ... no USR this year
I'm really sorry guys. I'd made some nice enhancements to the robot too, and was quite keen to see it in action with the changed rules.

Unfortunately my life's going through a few upheavals right now, and I neither have the energy or mental clarity to be able to work on the robot. I hope next year, if the championship's run then?

Best of luck to everyone who takes part. I'll try to keep track of how the races are going :)

    Hi Andrew,

    This is of course very bad news for the championship, but your well being comes first. I hope you can steady the ship as soon as possible.

    I was already wondering why you're not in the test races and still hope you can make some late entry into the championship to show us what we missed out.

    I wish you all the best and hopefully we get a 'real' championship again next year.

    Danny

    EDIT: I hope Paulo and maybe Bernhard will somehow decide to race now, after reading this news. Otherwise the track will be empty most of the time.

    EDIT2: And those race reviews, I will miss them ;)

      Really sorry - if I could race, I would.

      The changes were mostly perfecting a complete redesign of USR's off-raceline handling code that I introduced in the latter races last year. It still had significant bugs that made it very timid & ignore obvious overtaking opportunities, but those were fixed now.

      I didn't get the car to drive any faster, but that's not the point of the TRB this year. Ah well.

    I hope that everything goes well, and that you find the peace and space that you need to solve the most important.

      That's great news. We're getting slaughtered by Tim's teams at the moment. Maybe you can stop them winning the rest of the races :)

        Don't expect too much! USR's laptimes on alpine-2 would have put it squarely in the middle of the pack, and I seriously doubt I'll be fast enough to worry Tim ... that would take quite a lot of development work on my part to have any hope of catching up. It's making me realise how much of my pace dominance in the past was down to car choice & setup.

        So unfortunately, the best I might be able to do is disrupt the midfield battle, which I don't really think is what you want Danny ;)

            I did add a little something to USR that's based on an aspect of Max Verstappen's driving style ...

            Edit: With less downforce, USR's somewhat jagged steering inputs (inherited from K1999) are also causing excessive front tyre wear. I have no idea how to fix this, and it'll really limit what I can do with the robot.

              I have much more tyre wear than Tim. His bots drive so smooth. At Brondehach I'm still unable to enter the pits without spinning out of control, that's my problem at the moment ;)

                Yeah I've got pit problems as well. One time in three it'll nose-plant into the pit wall :(

      Hi Andrew

      I suppose there are a mistake in LRaceLine::SmoothSideRacingLines():

      if (fabs(tRInverse[rl][div]) > fabs(prevRI) * 2)
      {
      // more smoothing required, get the average of 7 divs
      double rI = 0.0;
      for (int i = -4; i <= 2; i++)
      {
      rI += tRInverse[rl][(div + i + Divs) % Divs];
      }
      tRInverse[rl][div] = rI / 7;
      }

      I think the intention is to correct 'tRInverse[LINE_LEFT/LINE_RIGHT][div]', but only 'tRInverse[LINE_MID][div]' gets the new value (calculated from LINE_MID, also). I don't know if this was fixed or not...

      Cheers

        ... or perhaps all this is ok, and the question doesn't matter at all.

          I must say that on an initial glance I couldn't see anything wrong with this code, but more to the point I'm not even sure what effect it has given that USR now calculates "side" racelines on the fly. That's the trouble when you change direction & explore different ideas as frequently as I have with this robot, it leads to lots of dead/zombie code lying around.

          USR needs a proper rewrite at this stage - it's too far gone for a mere refactor. Maybe one day :)
